Midwinter
by Mairéad Lewis

When Earth tilted
away from the sun
– the farthest all year –
through Meán Geimhridh
she stood braced
against the hard unsteadiness of
bruises and
cold remnants of
the broken china
– her mother’s mother’s china.

When Earth tilts
away from the sun
– the farthest all year –
through Meán Geimhridh
she stands braced
keeping vigil through
this tilting night
remembering that
darkness,
waiting for the new-born Sun.

(Meán Geimhridh: Celtic Midwinter, pronounced mean guym-rid)

Just Her Opinions And Beliefs
by Ndaba Sibanda

She doesn’t intend to be offensively offside,
yet you don’t need to be on Sithabile’s side,
She says: you may flag, scare, scold or strangle me,
A mother’s love is a mirror of care, agree to disagree.

Sithabile doesn’t always believe that Love and Sex
are synonymous in spite of that the worldly souls
seem to have applauded, attended and endorsed
their choreographed but contentious wedding.

She doesn’t believe that Holiday always
depends on Hotel for business or survival
but that Hotel eats, breathes and dreams Holiday.
She thinks Holy Day is petulant, precious and personal.

She believes that Good Health and Happiness
are good bedfellows we should invite always
on our dear friends’ wedding anniversaries
or birthdays. Please make a date with them.

She doesn’t think that Money and Happiness are one
and the same, either. She believes that if she were to choose
between the two, Happiness would be the ultimate choice,
only if the absence of Money won’t be the absence of Happiness!

The Land of a Thousand Hills
A magic African travel destination
Gishwati Forest is a feast of beauty

The Land of a Thousand Hills
Is a high altitude tropical forest,
Mount Bisoke mesmerizes

The Land of a Thousand Hills
Lake Kivu smiles with resorts,
Lovely coastlines and peaks

The Land of a Thousand Hills
Cavernous valleys, rolling hills,
Grasslands, parks and lodges

The Land of a Thousand Hills
Is not only about mountains,
A conservation and wildlife hub

The Land of a Thousand Hills
A tech hub whose smartness
Made Africa’s smartphones!

Prancing To The African Drum
by Ndaba Sibanda

Immersed in a fabulous folksong
They knew they couldn’t be wrong,

Keepers of the village dreams,
And the fun fireside memories

Pictured, listened and danced
To the African drum like a ballad

I Can’t Get Enough Of It
by Ndaba Sibanda

Please, please
take me there,
Let me have a blast,
Not once, not the last.

I seek to unwind…
until l can’t be found!
Yes, nowhere else but…
in the heart of the
Matobo National Park!

Fun galore…
Nature’s bliss mollifies
my soul at the Maleme Dam,
No, l want to go wild and jump
Over the giant granite boulders
overlooking the dam.

I have a must-attend meeting with
the gregarious reptiles there too!
Oh on the agenda is fun and fun,
We shall sit on those rocks and
chit-chat. No biting business today!
By the way, I would like reach
the summit of Malindindzimu,
‘the hill of benevolent spirits’
and experience the wonder
 Cecil Rhodes called
“View of the World”.

The San’s rock paintings
will certainly rock and
roll with me.

I am an ever-hungry consumer of
information, so the interpretive museum
at the Pomongwe Caves will come in handy!

Oh please take me there,
I want to feel home,
I want to feel the majestic African sun
brighten me up. Its rays kiss my face
and forehead with that unique tenderness.

Please accompany me to the Whovi Wild Area
which is home to several bird species
and lots of species of mammals.
Oh what a sight…

Look at the black and white rhinoceros,
the zebra, the giraffe, the antelope, the leopard,
the flat-footed cheetah, the brown hyena.

I am a fan of guided walks and pony.
Of course I will go fishing in some
of the dams in the Matobo National Park
before I disappear into one of those thatched lodges.
I need to slow down, cool down a little. Re-energise.
Tuck into something finger-licking good. Here I know
they serve one with mouth-watering stuff and comfort!

On the following day another paradise
waits for me. The mighty Victoria
Falls! This is Africa, dear. I can’t
get enough of this continent`s
heavenly tourist centres.
